ON a night when international ‘stars’ Safee Sali, Safiq Rahim and Norshahrul Idlan Talaha scored on their debut for Johor Darul Takzim, manager-cum-coach Fandi Ahmad, despite the smile on his face, had a message for his charges to keep their feet on the ground.
“Winning matches is not all about the ‘stars’ scoring. Teamwork is of utmost importance in winning matches. How they (the players) click will make a winning team,” said Fandi.
When asked if the big win (5-1) over Singapore club side Woodlands Wellington in the opening match of the Crown Prince of Johor Cup invitational quadrangular is an indication of his team’s strength to challenge for honours, Fandi chose to be diplomatic and said: “Let others worry about Johor Darul Takzim. We need not worry about them. Everybody seems to be watching us.
“This is just a pre-season build-up. Don’t get carried away with the big win. Keep your feet firmly on the ground.
“With all the big names in the team Johor Darul Takzim have become the focus in the M-League. They want to see how far we can go.
“It is up to you all (the players) to go out and deliver the goods. The big names scored and it gives you satisfaction because the team have invested in them. Hopefully, Johor Darul Takzim will reap the dividends.”
Safee hit a brace, while Safiq and Norshahrul and Spaniard Daniel Guiza scored one each. The win put Johor Darul Takzim in the final tomorrow and will play the winner of the tonight’s Johor-Pahang encounter.
