THE Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) have named a strong 20-member squad in a bid to capture their maiden Sudirman Cup when Kuala Lumpur hosts the 13th edition of the biennial mixed team tournament in May.
BAM’s coaching and training committee has called up Datuk Lee Chong Wei, Liew Daren and Chong Wei Feng for men’s singles, Tee Jing Yi and the Cheah sisters, Lydia and Sonia (women’s singles), Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong, Hoon Thien How-Tan Wee Kiong and Lim Khim Wah-Goh V Shem (men’s doubles), Woon Khe Wei-Vivian Hoo, Chow Mei Kuan-Lee Meng Yean (women’s double), Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying and Ong Jian Guo-Lim Yin Loo for the tournament that will take place from May 19-26.
The team will have their centralised training at the Juara Stadium in Bukit Kiara from May 7-18, as soon as the Malaysian Open GP Gold and the country’s 13th General Election end.
“All the team members will stay together at the official hotel during that period to build team spirit,” said the C&T chairman, Ng Chin Chai.
Seeded third, Malaysia have been drawn in Group C with Germany and Taiwan and should have no problems making it to the quarterfinals.
In 2011, Malaysia were knocked out by South Korea in the last eight.
