MUHAMMAD IRFAN SHAMSUDDIN is gearing himself for the Myanmar SEA Games this December by training every day under coach Fero Petrovic from Slovakia.
The 18-year old discus thrower said Petrovic has really sped up his progress, especially where technique and strength are concerned.
Irfan has been actively engaged in athletics since he was 15 and has been a member of the national team since he was 17.
This promising young talent has had success on the local and international scenes, winning the gold medal at the 2012 Sukma Pahang, silver at the Singapore Asean School Games 2011 and gold for discus throw as well as silver for shot put at the Singapore Youth SEA Games.
Irfan, who completed his Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM), is planning to enroll in Universiti Malaya by this June.
“I will either go into business or sports science, I haven’t decided yet.
“But for now I am concentrating on my sport and am trying to qualify for the SEA Games in December,” he said.
As for plans for the future, Irfan said that he is concentrating on competing in the 2020 Olympic Games.
“I think I am still too young and too ‘fresh’ to compete in the 2016 Rio Olympics, so I am going to train and build myself up for the 2020 Olympics instead”.
