The Maybank Malaysian Open 2014 provided the opportunity to 100 youngsters to meet three professional golfers – local ace Danny Chia and former Maybank Malaysian Open winners, Matteo Manassero (2011) and Arjun Atwal (2008). The youngsters were privileged to meet the trio in two seperate clinics that were staged on the sidelines of the prestigious MMO yesterday.
The players demonstrated their skills in putting, chipping and bunker shots as the children watched in awe. The clinics, are part of Maybank’s commitment to the development of junior golf in Malaysia. Since taking over as the title sponsor in 2006, Maybank has invested in several junior programmes.
The Maybank Junior Golf ā National Camp was introduced in 2006 and is a yearly event which gathers some of the nationās best junior golfers under one roof. The participants of the camp were exposed to various aspects of the game, from advanced techniques and mental preparations to golfing etiquette.
Maybank is also heavily involved in the Maybank Junior Golf – Champions Academy, which is a programme, aimed at developing junior golf talents from grassroots. Juniors who are selected for the comprehensive golf programme will be fully sponsored by Maybank Junior Golf.
The programme is open to children aged 6-12 years old. No prior golf skills are required to join.
Meanwhile, Danny said he loves conducting coaching clinics for children. āI love giving something back to the game and watching the kids brings me great joy,ā said Danny. āThese are the future golfers who will carry Malaysiaās flag when Iām old,ā he joked.
āI enjoyed my time and I believe the other golfers feel the same way too.ā
Danny added: āI saw a couple of kids who have potential. With proper training and guidance, they could go far. It depends on their parents and their desire.ā
The US$2.75 million Maybank Malaysian Open is being played at the KLGCC until Sunday.
