Selangor retained their mixed team title in the 100PLUS National Junior inter-state Under-18 championships with a 4-2 win over Penang in the final at the NSCRC Badminton Hall in Seremban yesterday.

Kedah took third place with a 5-2 win over hosts Negri Sembilan. In the semi-finals on Friday, Selangor beat Negri 4-1 while Penang stormed to a 4-1 win over Kedah.

Youth Olympic Games mixed doubles gold medal winner Cheam June Wei partnered Chua Cheah Lin to give Penang the first point with a 21-9, 22-20 win over Selangor’s Wong Man Hung-Teoh Mei Xing in the mixed doubles.

June Wei was Malaysia’s best performer in the recent Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing when he and Hong Kong’s Ng Tsz Yau won the mixed doubles gold with a 21-14, 23-21 win over Japan’s Kanta Tseneyama and Taiwan’s Lee Chia Hsin in the final to give Malaysia their first ever gold medal in the Games.

Selangor stormed back to make it 1-1 when national junior R. Satheishtharan proved too strong for Penang’s Sim Fong Hau in the bors’ first singles, winning 21-13, 21-12 win in 33 minutes.

However, Penang were back in the lead through Tan Jia Wei who crushed Selangor’s Eizlan Shah Misfahul Muneer  21-10, 21-15 in the second boys’ singles match. But it was not enough to stop the champions from retaining the title in a repeat of last year’s final.

Selangor came back strongly to win both the girls singles through M. Thinaah and and Ng Wan Win before taking an unassailable 4-2 through the Chua Khek Wei-Low Hang Yi, who clinched a 21-15, 21-19 win over Penang’s Ching Jakie-Ong Wei Khoon in the boys’ doubles.

Thinaah beat Kong Yi Jin 21-12, 21-12 while Wan Win outplayed Lee Shun Mei 21-10, 21-11.

Kedah took third place with a 5-2 win over hosts Negri Sembilan in the playoff.
