# Ratchanok Intanon wins women’s singles to give home supporters plenty to cheer

 

Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying, the seventh seeds, could only manage a runners-up spot in the mixed doubles in the USD120,000 Princess Sirivannavari Thailand Masters Grand Prix Gold in Bangkok on Saturday.

The top Malaysian pair fell to a 17-21, 15-21 defeat to China’s rising stars Zhang Siwei-Chen Qingchen in a 38 minute final. The Chinese sensations are the reigning world junior champions.

They are set to rule the mixed doubles and their credible run in Bangkok started in the qualifiers.

Despite the defeat Peng Soon-Liu Ying took another giant step in their quest for a place in the Rio Olympics later this year.

The champions pocketed USD9, 480 in prize money that came with the title while the Malaysians were USD4,560 richer for their efforts.

The men’s singles title was won by veteran South Korean shuttler Lee Hyun-il who defeated Hong Kong’s Hu Yun 21-18, 21-19 in a close fought encounter that lasted 48 minutes.

As expected the men’s was won by crack Indonesian pair and top seeds Mohammad Ahsan-Hendra Setiawan but they were fully stretched by second seeds Kim Gi-jung-Kim Sa-rang of Korea before winning 12-21, 21-15, 21-12 for the USD9,480 prize money.

Former world champion Ratchanok Intanon gave the home fans plenty to cheer when she defeated China’s Sun Yu 21-19, 18-21, 21-17 in a marathon women’s singles final which went 87 minutes.
