Yangon United made a lucky escape this week as their close 2-1 win over Zwekapin United at the Aung San Stadium ensured that they maintained their hold of the Myanmar National League (MNL) 2017 for now.

With the league taking a break to give the national side some valuable time, Yangon were dominant in the first half with two goals through Emerson in the 11th minute and striker Emeka sometime later.

But Zwekapin took control of the second half as they replied with the first goal off Khine Htoo in the 56th minute. They came close again on several occasions but Yangon kept it tight to deny them.

“We were lucky to escape with three points as the lads did not play particularly well,” admitted Yangon United head coach U Tin Maung Tun.

“Emeka was sick after the first half and had to be replaced and the team suffered as a result. I’m glad that we managed to hang on for the win.”

Replied Zwekapin midfielder Zin Phyo Aung: “we struggled in the first half but came back strongly after the breather. We came close to drawing the match from 2-0 down but were unfortunate not to share the points.”

Elsewhere, Ayeyawady United beat Chin United 2-0 at home in Pathine while Shan United also overcame Magwe by the same scoreline at the Thuwana Stadium.

Rakhine United edged GFA 3-2 as Southern Myanmar drew Nay Pyi Taw 0-0.
