He was crafty. He was deft. He was deceptive. That was Datuk Lee Chong Wei as he crushed Hong Kong’s Hu Yun in the second round and book his place in the quarter-finals of the Celcom Axiata Malaysia Open at Stadium Perpaduan in Petra Jaya, Kuching on Thursday.
Chong Wei, who is chasing his 12th Malaysia Open title showed that he is on track in his mission and will face Korean qualifier Jeon Hyeok-jin for a place in Saturday’s semi-finals.
The 34-year-old Chong Wei took only 27 minutes for his 21-8, 21-6 win over Hu Yun who simple dazed with his opponent’s performance. Several times Hu Yun was sent the wrong way as Chong Wei picked his points with ease.
“I will face a Korean qualifier (Hyeok-jin) in the quarter-finals. I have never played him before but it is each match at a time,” said Chong Wei after his match.
Lin Dan too had an easy match into the quarter-finals as he ripped Thailand’s Tanongsak Saensomboonsuk apart 21-8, 21-13 in 31 minutes. In the quarter-finals he will battle Indonesian youngsters Christie Jonatan.
Christie toiled for 69 minutes to defeat Taiwan’s Chou Tien Chen 21-23, 21-17, 21-19.
Meanwhile, newly crowned India Open champion Viktor Axelsen of Denmark was knocked out of the tournament by India’s unseeded Ajay Jayaram.
The 23-year-old Dane, who won the bronze medal at the Rio Olympics last year was packed off in a 44-minute three-set thriller by the 30-year-old Indian who staged a remarkable comeback for a 9-21, 21-14, 21-19 win.
Viktor had beaten Ajay in the first round in the India Open last week and was expecting another easy match after taking the first set. But he had no answer to Ajay’s onslaught once the Indian got into stride.
Ajay will face South Korean fifth seed Son Wan-ho who strolled past Indonesia’s Tommy Sugiarto 21-15, 21-15 in 38 minutes.
