Welson Sim smashed his own national record in the men’s 200m freestyle on the third day of the Malaysia Open Swimming Championships held at Hang Jebat Aquatic Centre, here today.

The national swimmer from Sarawak  clocked 1: 48.50s to rewrite the national record of 1: 47.67s which he recorded in the same championship last year.

The silver medal went to his teammate, Daniel William Henry Bego with 1.53.61s while Yeap  Zheng Yang of Selangor settled for the bronze with a time of 1.53.82s.

Speaking after his record  breaking feat, Welson said he was pleased with this success as it is a positive sign for him to face real competition in the Kuala Lumpur SEA Games to be held in August.

“I am  satisfied with today’s  perfomance. However, I do not put myself in the comfort zone and will continue to train until the day of competition.”

Welson said he was also happy for teammate Daniel William Henry Bego who put up a fine performance after recovering fully from injury.

“I am happy with the rise of  Bego  (Daniel William Henry Bego) and hopes that he can bounce back.”

Meanwhile, 18 year-old Asmalia  Filzati Redzuan of Selangor dreams of representing  Malaysia for the first time in 2017 Kuala Lumpur SEA Games.

“I hope to be picked to represent the country and promise to give my best performance,” said Asmalia, who is a member of the national junior swimming squad. –BERNAMA
