# Bad days for Malaysia in men’s and women’s doubles

# Chong Wei taken to three sets by Indonesia’s Tommy Sugiarto

On a day when Datuk Lee Chong Wei struggled in his first round win in the USD1 million BCA Indonesia Open Superseries Premier at the Jakarta Convention Center in Jakarta on Wednesday it was another disappointing performance from Malaysia’s top women’s doubles pair Vivian Hoo-Woon Khe Wei.

Vivian Hoo-Khe Wei surrendered meekly to Hong Kong’s Poon Lok Yan-Tse Ying Suet in only 31 minutes in their 21-9, 21-12 defeat. The sluggish performance from the pair is clear signals that they will be broken up and have new partners to check their slide.

Malaysia’s second pair Chow Mei Kuan-Lee Meng Yean were also shown the exit but they went out fighting in their defeat to No 5 seeds Chen Qingchen-Jia Yifan of China. The Chinese won 22-20, 13-21, 21-14 and needed a good 68 minutes to subdue the gritty Malaysians.

In the men’s doubles it was a losing debut for Malaysia’s second ranked pair Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi who lost out on experience to China’s Liu Cheng-Zhang Nan. The Chinese ranked No 15 defeated the No 23 ranked Malaysians 21-17, 21-12 on a day of upsets in the doubles.

It was disastrous day for No 1 ranked pairs in the men’s doubles and women’s doubles. Indonesia were hoping for top seeds Marcus Fernaldi Gideon-Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo but the top seeds suffered a shock first round defeat at the hands of world No 2 Mathias Boe-Carsten Mogensen of Denmark. The Danes won 21-16, 21-16 in 34 minutes.

Olympic champions and world No 1 Misaki Matsutomo-Ayaka Takahashi were also dumped out of the tournament – losing in straight sets 7-21, 20-22 to China’s Huang Yaqiong-Yu Xiaohan in 44 minutes. The defeat means the Japanese are still looking for their first superseries title this year.

Chong Wei, who is gunning for his seventh Indonesia Open title had comeback from a set down to beat Indonesian professional Tommy Sugiarto 13-21, 21-10, 21-18 in a match which lasted 62 minutes.

Second seed and current world No 1 Son Wan-ho of Korea eased into the second round when he tamed Singapore Open champion B. Sai Praneeth 21-14, 21-18. Praneeth also won the Thailand Open Grand Prix gold in Bangkok recently.

It was also end of the road for Rio Olympics bronze medallist and third seed Viktor Axelsen of Denmark – losing to compatriot Emil Holst 12-21, 21-12, 17-21.

Five-time world champion and twice Olympics gold medallist in Lin Dan was also dumped out of the tournament. Wang Tzu Wei of Chinese Taipei packed off the Chinese ace with a 21-16, 21-18 win in 42 minutes.  Olympics and world champion Chen Long of China kept his challenge alive with a 21-14, 21-14 win over Germany’s Marc Zwiebler. – BY RIZAL ABDULLAH
