Defending champions Malaysia thrashed hosts Singapore 3-0 in the boys’ badminton final to retain the title in the Asean Schools badminton championships at Our Tampines Hub in Singapore on Monday.

It was a far easier ride in the final for the Malaysian team after a closely fought 3-2 win in the group stage.

Chia Weijie started the ball rolling for Malaysia but he had to come through the distance before clinching a 21-13, 18-21, 21-11 win over Lee Wei Hong.

Malaysia got their second point through Lim Chong King in the second singles and he outplayed Jason Teh 21-19, 21-15 – which served as a morale booster for the Malaysian team.

The winning point came from Ng Tze Yong in the third singles. The Malaysian romped to a 21-13, 21-16 win.

Despite the defeat Singapore still celebrated. The silver medal was the republic’s highest achievement in the championships since its inauguration in 2009. Singapore’s previous best was a bronze medal.

Malaysia made it a double in the shuttle sport in the team event when the girls’ also won the gold medal with a 3-0 whitewash of Indonesia in the final. – BY RIZAL ABDULLAH
