# Malaysians win four of the five individual golds in badminton

# Malaysia had earlier won the boys’ and girls’ team events

Powered by former world junior champion Goh Jin Wei it was a Malaysian show in badminton in the ninth Asean Games in Singapore on Monday – winning six of the seven gold medals at stake.

The Malaysians added the boys’ doubles, girls’ singles and doubles and the mixed doubles titles in the individual events which ended at My Tampines Hub in Singapore on Monday. Malaysia had earlier in the week won the boys’ and girls’ team events.
The only title that slipped from Malaysia’s grasp was the boys’ singles which was an all-Indonesia affair with Nur Yahya Ady Velani defeating compatriot Handoko Yusuf for the gold.

Malaysia may have won only the bronze in the boys’ singles through Chia Weijie and Lim Chong King (both beaten in the semi-finals) but the Malaysians, however, were unstoppable in the boys’ doubles with Chang Yee Jun-Ng Eng Cheong taking the gold defeating Singapore’s Andy Kwek Jun Liang-Jason Teh Jia Heng in the final.

Jin Wei, 17, the 2015 world junior champion, as expected took the gold in the girls’ singles – defeating teammate Eoon Qi Xuan for the gold. Indonesia’s Alya Rahma Mulya and Desima Aqmar won the bronze after losing their semi-final matches.

The girls’ doubles title also went Malaysia’s way with Toh Ee Wei-Pearly Tan Kong Le defeating their Indonesian opponents Elvira Arumningtyas-Elizabeth Jovita in the final.

The mixed final was an all-Malaysian affair. Ng Eng Cheong-Toh Ee Wei winning the gold against compatriots Chang Yee Jun-Pearly Tan Kong Le.

Eng Cheong and Ee Wei thus clinched their third gold each – adding to the gold in the boys’ doubles and girls’ doubles plus the gold in the team event.

Malaysia finished on top with six gold, two silver and four bronze for a total of 12 medals. Indonesia with a 1-3-5 tally finished second followed by Singapore in third place with a 0-2-1 tally and Thailand 0-0-3. The Philippines came in last with 0-0-1 tally. – BY RIZAL ABDULLAH
