Vietnam came and delivered what was expected of them when they confidently scored a 6-0 win over hosts Malaysia to give themselves the well-deserved gold medal in women’s football tonight at the UiTM Stadium.
With Myanmar already claiming the bronze two days earlier, the battle for gold was left until the final day of the event with Thailand taking on the Philippines and Vietnam playing Malaysia.
The Thais could not build much of an advantage in the afternoon when they could only eke out a close 3-1 win over the Philippines – off goals from Rattikan Thongsombut (38th minute), Nisa Romyen (67th) and Pitsamai Sornsai (72nd).
With the target of scoring at least five goals to clinch their fifth title – to equal the record held by Thailand – the Vietnam girls strutted onto the pitch full of confidence.
And it took them just seven minutes to break the porous Malaysian defence off Vu Thi Nhung before adding further goals form Nguyen Thi Lieu (13th, 79th), Nguyen Thi Muon (40th, 54th) and Hunyh Nhu (45th).
