Rozaimi Rozali presented Malaysia with a gold medal in the Games taekwondo competition at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre on Sunday.

In the kyorugi below 68kg final,  Rossimi and Filipino Arven Alcantara ended their bout tied at 17-17 but the jury’s decision favoured the Malaysian.

The bronze was shared by Nutthawee Klompong of Thailand and Laos’ Sorphabmixay Sithikon.

“I did not expect the gold to come my way after the score was tied at 17-17. It came as a big surprise,” said the 23-year-old Rozaimi who won bronze in the 58kg event in the Myanmar SEA Games.

Meanwhile, Nur Intan Zulaikha and P.Thinagaran Naidu contributed a bronze each in the kyorugi women’s below 62kg and men’s below 74kg respectively.

In the women’s 57kg category, Banjarat Yangtrakul from Thailand won gold by defeating Vietnam’s Pham Thi Thu Hien 10-9 while Tubbs Casandre Nicole of Cambodia and  Souksamay Phenkhamong from Laos won bronze medals.

Ha Thi Nguyen from Vietnam bagged the women’s 62kg gold following a 2-10 victory over Indonesian Shaleha Fitriana Yusuf.

In the last event of the day, the Philippines clinched the men’s 74kg and below category gold through Morrison Samuel Thomas Harper. Indonesian Dinggo Ardian Prayogo and Malaysian
