Badminton Association president Datuk Seri Norza Zakaria singled out the men’s singles as “still a disappointment” as Malaysia failed to achieve their two gold target in the 29th SEA Games.

The badminton competition ended on Tuesday at the Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil with Malaysia winning their only gold in the shuttle sport through 17-year-old Goh Jin Wei in the women’s singles.

While congratulating Jin Wei for winning the gold in women’s singles, Norza added Malaysia would have done better if not for the disappointing performance from players like Iskandar Zulkarnain Zainuddin.

“I congratulate Jin Wei for winning the gold and also Somiia Cheah for reaching the final. However, our men’s singles is still a disappointment. There is also this tendency of our players not able to finish off matches.

“The last mile has been a problem for them,” added Norza who celebrated his 51st birthday on Tuesday.

Malaysia finished the badminton competition with a 1-4-2 haul while it was a 2-4-2 bronze tally at the last Sea Games in Singapore in 2015. – BY RIZAL ABDULLAH
