MYANMAR took advantage of Singapore’s lapse in defence to register a comfortable 2-0 win in their opening Group A football competition match at Selayang Stadium on Monday (14 Aug).
Aung Thu found the net in both halves to ensure Myanmar’s victory and kept their challenge in the competition on track.
However, Myanmar had to wait right until the end of first half before finding the net in the 45th minute through through Aung Thu.
Singapore made several attempts to put themselves back into the game, but found goalkeeper Sann Sat Naing, who performed brilliantly throughout the match, as their main stumbling block.
Richard Tardy’s charges tried hard to get back into the game after resumption but to no avail. The Singaporeans found Aung Thu too hot to handle and succumbed to his second goal in the 60th minute to keep their 2-0 lead intact till the final whistle.
Myanmar face Laos at the UiTM Stadium on Wednesday (16 Aug) while Singapore square off against host Malaysia in their next match at Shah Alam Stadium.
Singapore captain Irfan Fandi Ahmad, was clearly disappointed, saying: “We lost concentration in the first half, allowing Myanmar to roam freely. We’ll have to bounce back and will plot a new strategy in our next tie against Malaysia.”
