THE Malaysian contingent for the 29th Kuala Lumpur SEA Games 2017 moved into the Renaissance Hotel on Friday (4 August 2017) in the first step towards realising the nation’s aspiration by emerging overall champions in the biennial Games from Aug 19-30.

Located in the heart of the city, the hotel serves as the official residence for the 1,039-strong Malaysian contingent which comprises of 876 athletes from various sports disciplines and team officials.

They were met on arrival at the hotel by Chef de Mission Datuk Marina Chin and officials from the National Sports Council, National Sports Institute and members of the organising committee.

Datuk Marina, a seven-time SEA Games 100m hurdles gold medalist, disclosed that the athletes and officials will be involved in a trial run until August 10 during the final phase training camp at the hotel to familiarise themselves with the real situation and facilities.

“In the next seven days, athletes will be travelling from the hotel to the various competition venues. They will also be testing out the various facilities at the hotel such as physiotherapy room, gymnasium and food,” said the former track queen.

“This process of a dry run is to enable us to identify problems (should they crop up). It is a vital part in ensuring everything goes on smoothly before the Games begin,” said Datuk Marina, adding that athletes from sports such as equestrian, polo, muay and diving are exempted from this dry run as they are either training or involved in competitions in the country or abroad.

Silat exponent Muhammad Robial Sobri, who was among the athletes that moved into the Malaysian contingent’s official residence, said he is determined to win a medal in front of home fans.

“We had a very fruitful training programme in Belgium recently and this is our final phase. I am glad everything is moving well in our plans,” said Muhammad Robial, who took up the sport 11 years ago at the age of 13.

In the 28th edition of the SEA Games held in Singapore two years ago, Muhammad Robial clinched a silver medal in the Class H 80-85 category.
