There was a silver lining for Malaysia in the women’s pole vault final when Chuah Yu Tian clinched the silver medal with a height of 3.80m at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil on Friday.
The gold went to Thailand’s Chayanisa Chomchuendee who cleared 4.10m in her second attempt. The Thai then asked the bar to be raised to 4.22m for a new Sea Games record but failed in all her three attempts.
The SEA Games women’s pole vault record of 4.21m is held by her sister Sukanya Chonchuendee set at the Myanmar Sea Games in Nay Pyi Taw in 2013.
Elsewhere it was gloom for Malaysia in the women’s shot put with Rahilah Othman and Bibi Nuraishah Ishak faring poorly to finish fifth and sixth with a distance of 13.13m and 13.10m respectively.
Indonesia’s Eki Febri Ekawati won the gold with a heave of 15.39m while two Thais – Areerat Intadis (15.33m) and Sawitri Thoingchao (14.26m) took the silver and bronze medals respectively.
