Thailand’s women Futsal team won their fourth SEA Games crown when they blasted hosts Malaysia 12-0 in their final round robin tie to win the group.

With the title already in the bag following closest challenger Indonesia crashing 2-1 defeat to Vietnam, the Thais were in confident mode against a hapless Malaysian side who just put up a token resistance.

“It was by no means an easy match in spite of the scoreline. But we are very glad to win this game and secure the gold medal,” said Thai head coach Udom Taveesuk.

Thailand had previously won the title in 2007 (Thailand), 2011 (Indonesi) and also 2013 (Myanmar).

Going into the final day of competition, both Thailand and Indonesia were on the same seven points after three matches while Vietnam were on four points.

Indonesia were hoping to at least beat Vietnam to stand a chance for the title while Thailand – who will take on hosts Malaysia in their final game in the group – will play Malaysia.

But as things stand with Indonesia at the losing end off two strikes from Do Thi Nguyen in the 28th minute and Trinh Nguyen Thanh Hang (32nd), before replying through Novita Piranti (39th), it has given the title to the Thais.

Even if they had Thailand lost the game against Malaysia, they are comfortable at the top of the standings with the same seven points as Indonesia and Vietnam but on better goal difference.

With the gold already in the bag for the Thais, the match against Malaysia was just a formality with the hosts giving up two own goals Lovelytha Jelus (8th minute) and Norhawa Mhd Yasin (31st).

The rest of the Thai goals were scored by Darika Peanpailun (2nd and 6th minute), Siranya Srimanee (13th), Pacharaporn Srimuang (16th), Hataichanok Tappakun (18th, 24th), Jiraprapa Nimrattanasing (21st), Sasicha Phothiwing (24th), Mutita Senkram (32nd) and Jenjira Bubpha (36th).

“Winning silver has at least gave us some consolation,” said Vietnam head coach Truong Quoc Tuan. ““We had aspired for the gold medal but it was not to be.”
