Kota Kinabalu made a strong impact at the Sutera Harbour Junior Age Group Tennis Tournament which is the 2nd leg of the Sabah Junior Tennis Tour 2017 in Kota Kinabalu over the weekend.
Played at the Sutera Harbour courts, Kota Kinabalu girls clinched a double with Clarisa Sofia (Girls’ Under-16) and Eliora Hii (Girls’ Under-10) winning the singles and also the doubles titles in their respective categories.
Clarisa Sofia defeated Cally Fung in the Under-16 singles final and later teamed up with compatriot Kenwyn Chung to win the doubles title against Sabrina Trisha-Jassnavissri of Sandakan.
The Under-10 singles final Eliora defeated Kyra Vamsikrish in an all-Kota Kinabalu final. They later paired up to win the doubles title – defeating teammates Chloe Wong-Glenda Lee in the final.
The Boys’ Under-16 singles title went to Sandakan’s Harish John Sunil Manoharan who beat Darius Wong of Kota Kinabalu in the final.
Sandakan also took the Boys’ Under-16 doubles title through Hiew Kiew Jun-Luke Guansing who stopped Kota Kinabalu’s Edric Tan-Ryan Chee in the final.
Sabah Tennis Association president Johnson Koh said 90 players from all over Sabah, representing their districts, took part in the tournament which was marred by evening rain.
“Apart from the rain the tournament was an overwhelming success,” said Johnson.
Sabah tennis juniors coach Tito Latoja said Sabah’s development programme for the juniors is bearing fruit.
“All districts showed improvement overall,” said Tito.
