UPGRADING of facilities at the Axiata Arena and National Aquatic Centre in Bukit Jalil is near-completion to meet the demands for upcoming 9th ASEAN Para Games.

Among the facilities that are being upgraded are toilets, bathrooms, cafeteria and seating gallery to ensure it is user-friendly for athletes with special needs as well as people with special needs.

Axiata Arena Venue manager, Enni Shalina Mokhtar, said: “Basically most of the structure and facilities remain the same except for additional changes to meet the needs of Para athletes and fans. We are upgrading the seating gallery and toilets for wheelchair-bound athletes and fans.”

However, unlike the Axiata Arena, toilet facilities for wheelchair-bound athletes at the National Aquatics Centre are the main focus as there is none at the moment. “We are currently converting two to three toilets for the use of wheelchair-bound athletes. These facilities will be ready in the next one or two days,” said National Aquatics Centre venue manager, Abu Yasir Abu Noor.

Among additional facilities provided during the Para Games are 150 special OKU car parking lots at the B entrance of the Kuala Lumpur Sports City, Buggy services, OKU friendly buses with wheelchair access and 1,300 seating places for wheelchair-bound fans at competition venues.

Access to all competition venues including the opening (Sept 17) and closing ceremonies (Sept 23) is free. For the opening ceremony fans will need to obtain a pass at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil.
