Danial Frost revelled in the wet and cold conditions at Sepang International Circuit to take pole position for the Formula 4 SEA Championshipâs opening race of the season.
The Singaporean clocked an astonishing 2:15.006 seconds to pip Nayan Chatterjee, who timed 2:16.211
âI was inspired by my meeting F1 drivers Lance Stroll and Esteban Ocon yesterday. They have reached the pinnacle of motorsports yet are not much older than I am,â said the 16-year-old.
âI was determined to go all out today and am glad to have set the fastest times.
âI hope to impress and continue my winning ways on this circuit.â
Frost won four races in SIC in the inaugural Formula 4 SEA Championship last year.
The start of the Formula 4 SEA Championshipâs free practice session was marred by poor weather. But that didnât dampen the driversâ spirits.
The weather started to improve as the session carried forward. However amidst the weather conditions, there were gems that stood out from the coal.
One was Mumbai native Chatterjee who said: âI enjoyed the damp weather conditions. Reminds me of kartingâ.
True to his word, Chatterjee finished second in qualifying.
Kane Shepherd developed his lap times brilliantly, starting with a 2:43.873 in practice to clock 2:16.357 to capture third spot on the starting grid.
Home grown Nazim Azman qualified in seventh position with a time of 2:18.085.
An incident involving Romain Grosjean in the second F1 free practice forced race stewards to postpone Race 1 due to extended repair works on sections of the track.
Formula 4 SEA moves to the Philippines from 20-22 October after SIC followed by a visit to Sentul Indonesia on the 23-25 November. After the New Year, we bid sawadeekap to Buriram, Thailand from January 12-14 before returning back to SIC on February 8-10.
