Malaysia’s campaign in the USD600,000 Victor Korea Open came to an end when Chan Peng Soon-Cheah Yee See were beaten in the semi-finals in the Super Series event.

The Malaysians went down tamely to China’s seasoned campaigners Wang Yilyu-Huang Dongping 15-21, 9-21 in only 43 minutes.

Despite the defeat to the 13th ranked Chinese pair the Malaysians next head to the USD325,000 Daihatsu Yonex Japan Open in Tokyo from Sept 19-24 – ready to carry their challenge.

Peng Soon, who won the silver medal in last year’s Rio Olympics with his regular partner Goh Liu Ying, has been paired with Yee See recently the Korea Open was their first Super Series where they made the quarter-finals.

Liu Ying is still recuperating from surgery in Germany for a shoulder injury.

Meanwhile, it will be an all-Indonesia men’s singles final between two Indonesian youngsters – Sea Games gold medallist Jonatan Christie and Anthony Ginting.

Ginting stunned world No 1 and top seed Son Wan-ho 16-21, 21-18, 21-13 which left the Korean still searching for his first home title. Jonatan eased past Wang Tzu-wei of Chinese Taipei in straight games 21-13, 21-17.

The women’s singles final will be a repeat of last month’s World Championships final with Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara taking on India’s P.V. Sindhu.

Fifth seed Sindhu was taken the full distance by China’s No 8 seed He Bingjiao before prevailing 21-10, 17-21, 21-16 while Okuhara, the eighth seed, won in straight games 21-17, 21-18 against compatriot Akane Yamaguchi. – BY RIZAL ABDULLAH
