The Jalur Gemilang is still flying in the World Junior Championships (Eye Level Cup) when fourth seeds Leong Jun Hao (men’s singles) and Goh Jin Wei (women’s singles) marched into the last four with straight games victories in their quarter-final matchesĀ on Friday.

Jun Hao, the reigning Asian Junior Under-19 champion stormed past Frenchman, 14th seed Christo Popov 21-14, 21-12Ā in 36 minutes. For a place in the final the 18-year-old Malaysian will face Japan’s sixth seed Kodai Naraoka.

Naraoka pulled off a big upset in the quarter-finals when came back from a game down to oust India’s second seed Lakshya Sen 14-21, 21-17, 21-14Ā in 63 minutes.

In the other quarter-final top seed Kunlavut Vitidsarn of Thailand overcame a tough a first game against Japan’s Takuma Obayashi before prevailing 25-23, 21-16Ā in 45 minutes. He will meet China’s unseeded Gao Zhengze who beat Ireland’s Nguyen Nhat 18-21, 21-18, 21-7.

Jin Wei, the 2015 world junior champion kept her fine run in the individual event with an easy 21-12, 21-5 win over Thailand Chananchida Jucharoen in only 21 minutes. The Malaysian hope, however, faces a daunting task in the semi-finals when she faces China’s Han Yue, the Asian Junior Under-19 champion.

Han Yue, the fifth seed in Yogjakarta, defeated compatriot Zhou Meng 21-13, 21-10Ā in 33 minutes.

Indonesia’s hopes in the women’s singles are also alive when third seed Gregoria Mariska swept into the last four with a 21-10, 21-13 win over compatriot Aurum Oktavia WinataĀ in 27 minutes. Mariska plays China’s sixth seed Cai Yanyan in the semifinals.

Yanyan pulled off a major upset when she dumped top seed Pattarasuda Chaiwan, the Asian Junior Under-17 champion. Pattarasuda, who is also the Asian Under-19 runners-up, was beaten 19-21, 21-14, 20-22.

Malaysia’s hopes in the men’s doubles and mixed doubles ended in the quarter-finals.
