Chiang Rai United made a grand start to the start of the new Thai football season when they grabbed their first crown after beating a highly confident Buriram United side 6-5 on penalties to lift the Thailand Champions Cup.

The scored at the end of regulation was 2-2.

Buriram gave up a two goal advantage off goals from Edgar Bruno da Silva (sixth minute) and Diogo Luis Santo (34th) to allow Chiang Rai to score through Sivakorn Tiatrakul (59th) and Victor Cardozo (67th) to force the game into the shootout.

The match was also the first time that the VAR (Video Assistant Referee) system was used in Thailand and which also saw Buriram’s Diogo getting a red card for an elbow late in the game.
