Former Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola (ESP) shows off his golf skills in the Pro-Am at the BMW PGA Championship

A galaxy of sport and showbiz stars opens the prestigious tournament at the Wentworth Club, London

Guardiola tees off alongside local favourite Tommy Fleetwood (ENG, 2017 European Tour Race to Dubai winner) and Champions League winner and European champion Peter Schmeichel (DEN)

Pep Guardiola is brimming with confidence. Especially since leading Manchester City to the Premier League title in record-breaking fashion. Despite a remarkable portfolio of success, the former Bayern Munich coach admitted to feeling a little nervous ahead of his first tee shot in the Pro-Am at the BMW PGA Championship. “If everybody left the tee and allowed me to take this shot alone, it would be okay,” joked the Spaniard, who was playing alongside Tommy Fleetwood, the reigning European number one.

He need not have worried. Having watched Fleetwood and his Pro-Am team-mates – former Southampton striker Matt Le Tissier (ENG) and Manchester United goalkeeping legend Peter Schmeichel – tee off, Pep rifled his ball straight down the centre of the fairway, before celebrating wildly with Fleetwood.

Guardiola, who plays off a handicap of 12, was honest in his appraisal after his round: “The West Course is too difficult for me. It is a lovely golf course – but one for professionals. It was terrific to play with Tommy Fleetwood. When you are there alongside him, you realise just how good he is. It was a really good day, but I am getting worse every season. Unfortunately, I just don’t have enough time to play golf.”

The star-studded Pro-Am field also included former England footballers Paul Scholes and Teddy Sheringham, ex Formula 1 world champion Damon Hill (ENG), singer Niall Horan (IRL), and Hollywood stars Damian Lewis (ENG, Homeland, Billions) and Jamie Dornan (NIR, Fifty Shades of Grey).
