Former Ireland scrum-half Peter Stringer on Tuesday announced his retirement from professional rugby union at the age of 40.

Stringer won 98 Test caps in an 11-year international career that saw him play a key role in Ireland’s 2009 Grand Slam in the Six Nations Championship.

He also made more than 200 appearances for Munster, helping the Irish province win the European Cup in 2006.

Stringer then went on to play for several English Premiership clubs, most recently representing Worcester.

“From the age of five all I ever dreamed of doing was playing rugby. I cannot describe how it feels to have lived that dream for nearly all my life,” Stringer said.

“The journey has been an uncompromising obsession filled with memories I will cherish forever.”
