SABAHAN Arena Satu Samin was involved in a thrilling three-set battle before confirming her hat-trick victory and emerged as Girls’ Under-16 champion on the final day of the 100PLUS National Junior Grand Prix Finals in Seremban near here.

The Kota Belud-born young star, who won the first and second leg of the tournament,  faced stiff resistance from arch rival Isabel Liau Bei Yi of BAM who earlier took the first set 21-17.

Arena managed to absorb the intense pressure to come back strongly and forced a rubber game after winning 21-14 in the second set.  Arena kept her momentum and composure in the decider, forcing Isabel into making a series of errors before taking winning 21-16 to win the title.

“My movement was restricted and I was a bit tried due to the short rest after yesterday’s late evening semifinal match. It was difficult in the first set but I managed to bounce back and regained my confidence in the second and third set,” said Arena.

In the boys’ singles final competition, Demond Anthony Samin failed to follow her sister’s footstep after going down 22-10, 23-21 at the hands of Melaka’s Ong Ken Yon.

“Demond played aggresively and had good on court skills. All I have to do is to defend well, play along and took advantage of his mistakes to win the game,” said Ken Yong.

Penang doubles pair of Rayner Beh Chun Meng-Goh Boon Sze were given a scare by rivals Muazzam Danish Hanafi – Muhd Haikal Nazri of BAM before taking the title with a 21-17, 11-21, 21-16 win in the boys’ double finals.

Kedah twin pair of Cheng Su Hui and Cheng Su Yin meanwhile had it easy against Goh Pei Kee – Isabel Liau Bei Yi of BAM, winning the Under-16 girls’ doubles crown in a straight set match of 21-11, 21-11.

“Goh and Isabel were not in their usual element and that gave us some advantage. We remained focus throughout the match and held on to our strategy and style of play,” said Su Hui.

The five-day tournament, featuring the country’s future badminton stars, ended succesfully with BAM President Datuk Seri Norza Zakaria presenting trophies and prizes to all winners at the Negeri Sembilan Chinese Recreation Club.

Also present were BAM Secretary Datuk Ng Chin Chai and 100PLUS Sponsorship and Activation Manager Engku Isyamuddin Tuan Losin.
