Just five days after the FA Cup final, champions Pahang and runners-up Selangor resumed their Super League campaign with shock results on Wednesday.
 
The shock of the day was at the Sultan Mohd IV Stadium in Kota Bahru where bottom-placed Kelantan pulled off a stunning 2-1 win over Selangor – game the Red Giants from the Klang Valley were favored to garner full points.
 
Instead, Kelantan scored through Shafiq Shaharuddin, son of former national great Shaharuddin Abdullah who earned his first international cap in Malaysia’s 1-0 win over Fiji in an A international last week.
 
The talented Shafiq curled the into the left corner past a rooted Selangor keeper Khairul Azhan Khalid on 35 minutes to give the Red Warriors the lead. 
 
Selangor pulled level on 78 minutes through substitute Sean Eugene Selvaraj, who replaced Joseph Kallang Tie. 
 
After both teams missed several scoring opportunities but Kelantan custodian Shahrizan Ismail was in top form to deny Selangor’s Spanish hitman Rufino Segovia and Evans Dimas with good reading of the game.
 
Kelantan sealed full points through Danial Ashraf Abdullah in the 85th minute with a well-timed run to hit home from close range.
 
At the Darul Makmur Stadium in Kuantan, the newly crowned FA Cup champions struggled to share points with PKNP (Perak SEDC) with a scoreless draw.
 
Pahang took the field with four key players, either through injuries or suspension.
 
The Elephants remained fifth in the league standings with 29 points from 18 matches and PKNS FC in sixth place with 26 points. Johor Darul Takzim, who scored their 15th win retained the Malaysian Super League title for the fifth year running with an unassailable 47 points with four matches remaining.
 
Perak, despite the 2-1 defeat to JDT in Ipoh on Tuesday, remained second with 31 points, Kedah (30), Terengganu (30) third and fourth respectively, separated by goal difference.
 
The biggest score of the night was registered by PKNS at the Shah Alam Stadium with a massive 5-3 win over Negri Sembilan. Negri went down to the bottom of the 12-team league after the big defeat – exchanging the position with Kelantan who moved up a rung to 11 with 14 points. Negri has 11 points. – BY RIZAL ABDULLAH
