#Fifth fastest in first day of Free Practice

Malaysian rider Azlan Shah Kamaruzaman has a good chance of putting a third SuperSports 600cc Asian Champion title into his resume. Racing at the Chang International Circuit for the season finale of the 2018 FIM Asia Road Racing Championship this weekend, Azlan will need to finish second or better in both Race 1 and Race 2 in order to overcome a 34-point deficit behind Australian rider Anthony West.

In the first day of free practice, Azlan, who races for the Manual Tech KYT Kawasaki Racing team, was clocked at fifth fastest with 1’39.691s. Local riders Ratthapong Wilairot and Decha Kraisart dominated the free practice sessions to top the timesheets with the quickest times of 1’38.939s and 1’39.226s respectively.

Azlan is one of six riders with a shot at the SuperSports 600cc Asian crown. These riders are, Anthony West, Andi Farid Izdihar, Ahmad Yudhistira, Mohd Zaqhwan Zaidi and Ratthapong Wilairot.

In the Underbone 150cc class, Mohd Helmi Azman who is only eight points away from winning the first major title of his career has painted himself into a corner. After two quick free practice sessions, Helmi’s engine blew up at the start of the qualifying for the SuperPole. While the SCK Rapido Hi Rev Honda Racing Team mechanics raced against time to get Helmi back out on track, the 19-year-old Malaysian rider could only watch helplessly as wildcard Wawan Wello smash the lap record with 1’59.998s.

Helmi did not qualify for the Underbone 150cc SuperPole and will face the uphill task of winning the championship from 19th on the grid in both Race 1 and Race 2.
