Malaysia’s missed chances in front of over 87,000 fans at the National Stadium tonight has given Thailand an advantage for the AFF Suzuki Cup return leg semi-final match in Bangkok. Although the hosts had numerous opportunities, they failed to convert any of their attempts and had to settle for a 0-0 draw tonight.

It was clearly a frustrating outing for Malaysia, which maintained their unbeaten track record against the Thais at this venue. But for Thailand, the draw was a welcomed result. “It was a hard match today but if we did not win today, at least we did not lose the game,” said Thai coach Milovan Rajevac. “Although we did not score, in the end I am satisfied with this result.”

The Malaysians, fired up by the packed stadium, dominated the match and were constantly harassing their opponents. Mohamadou Sumareh, Safawi Rasid and Norshahrul Idlan Talaha got into the excellent positions but simply could not get their shots through.

“They played one of their best games, the players very focussed, had good intensity, only we missed a few chances. Overall, the team played very well throughout, even though the Thais are a quality side, and that’s a good sign for our team,” said Tan Cheng Hoe, the Malaysian coach.

Mohamed Syamer Kutty, later named the Honor Man-of-the-Match, said: “We gave our best but just could not convert. We realise it will be tough in Bangkok but we feel we can get a good result there.”

The second leg semi-final will be played at the Rajamangala Stadium in Bangkok on Wednesday.

The first leg semi-final between the Philippines and Vietnam will take place tomorrow with the return leg on Thursday.
