Manchester City’s chances of retaining the Premier League title were hit after surrendering an early lead to lose 2-1 at relegation-threatened Newcastle on Tuesday.

Matt Ritchie’s 80th-minute penalty completed a remarkable turnaround by Newcastle, who fell behind to a goal from Sergio Aguero inside 25 seconds. It was the quickest goal scored in the league this season.

“Yes I think we had a game plan and the game plan was not to concede a goal in the first minute and then the reaction of the players was really good.

“So we said at half time we have to stay in the game, we have to keep going, we have our chances so be sure to continue working as hard as we did and I think that the fans appreciated that in the end because it’s not just that we won, but the way that we won.”said Rafa Benitez

Salomon Rondon cancelled out Aguero’s goal with a 66th-minute equaliser.

City’s loss kept Liverpool four points clear of the champions ahead of their home game against Leicester on Wednesday. City have 14 games to make up what could be a seven-point deficit.

“Yes I think it would not be fair with Manchester City so obviously I am closer than another one to Liverpool as a club but I am really pleased because Newcastle United won.

“That is the main thing and if it is good for them then fine, but I don’t want to disrespect the Manchester City fans or the club.”added Benitez

Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez dismissed suggestions that he was happy to help his former club Liverpool by defeating their title rival. SNTV
