Hockey International Technical Official Nor Azmi Safar is the latest Malaysian League official to have fallen victim to an accident while on his way home after officiating a Premier Division match in Kuala Terengganu.
The 38-year-old army officer was the technical official on duty for the match between Terengganu Hockey Team and Tenaga Nasional at the Batu Buruk Stadium on Sunday. Tenaga won the match 3-2.
Nor Azmi was travelling alone to Kuala Kangsar on Monday when the accident took place at around 10.30am on Monday when his Perodua Viva collided with a Perodua Myvi driven by a woman with other passengers that was headed to Pasir Puteh from Penang.
He suffered a fractured left leg and a fractured right femur plus neck injuries and has been admitted to the Pasir Puteh Hospital and is expected to undergo surgery on Tuesday.
This is the second accident involving a Malaysian Hockey official. The first involved an umpire who was on his way to officiate a match in Kuala Lumpur. Another umpire suffered a calf injury while doing a match.
It is not known if any of the officials are insured by the Malaysian Hockey Confederation as many of them travel for away matches.
The Malaysian Hockey League is played over a tight scheduled with matches even on the eve of the coming Chinese New Year on Feb 5 and 6. One of the matches involves China’s Liaoning HC. There are also matches on Feb 7th, 8th and 9th. – BY RIZAL ABDULLAH
