Men’s doubles Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi are the “lone rangers” left to keep Malaysia’s challenge alive in the USD350,000 Perodua Malaysia Masters in the finals at the Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil on Sunday.

In an all-Malaysia semi-final on Saturday the youngsters upset Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik in a 44-minute three-set thriller – prevailing 21-6, 8-21, 21-19 to advance to final.

It will be an uphill battle for the Malaysians when they take on current World No 1 and top seeds Marcus Fernaldi Gideon-Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo for the title. The crack Indonesian pair put paid to another Malaysian challenge, Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong.

The Indonesians, however, were made to slog for their 21-18, 22-20 victory in 37 minutes as the Malaysians fought in vain to force a rubber but held out to deny the Rio Olympics silver medallists.

V Shem-Wee Kiong turned professional at the start of the new year and won the Thailand Masters in Bangkok last week.

“We made errors in eagerness to win and allowed our opponents to get easy points. Still, we are happy with our overall performance since quitting the national team,” said Wee Kiong. – BY RIZAL ABDULLAH
