All England delight for Aaron Chia-Wooi Yik in men’s doubles

Give them time and Malaysia can count on youngsters Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik in the men’s doubles as All-England debutants marched into the quarter-finals in style.

Aaron Chia-Wooi Yik playing in the world’s oldest badminton tournament dished out an impressive performance to dump European hope Kim Astrup-Anders Skaarup Rasmussen in straight games – 21-19, 21-16 win in 42 minutes.

The head-to-head count against the fifth seeds and sixth-ranked Danes stands 3-0 in favor of the Malaysians – a further boost to their confidence as the chase for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics begin in May.

Aaron Chia-Wooi Yik will face China’s former world champions Liu Cheng-Zhang Nan in the quarter-finals. The Chinese defeated Lee yang-Wang Chi-lin of Chinese Taipei 22-20,16-21, 21-11 in 65 minutes.

“To beat the Danes in the All England is certainly a big boost to our confidence although we beat them twice in our two previous meetings,” said a delighted Aaron Chia.

Malaysia’s other men’s doubles pair Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong had earlier beaten Japan’s No 4 seeds Hiroyuki Endo-Yuta Watanabe 21-18, 21-19 to reach the last eight.

V Shem-Wee Kiong, the former world No 1, will meet Indonesia’s No 8 seeds Fajar Alfian-Muhammad Rian Ardianto in the quarter-finals. RIZAL ABDULLAH
