Azroy Hakeem Anuar has been Malaysia’s top performer so far at Round 2 of the 2019 FIM Asia Road Racing Championship in Australia this weekend.

At Race 1 on Saturday, Azroy was the only Malaysian to make it to the podium when he started the SuperSports 600cc race from third on the grid to finish in the same position at the chequered flag.

The 600cc race started with points-leader Peerapong Boonlert diving past polesitter Ibrahim Norrodin for the lead.

While the Thai Yamaha rider maintained a strong pace at the front, Azroy was caught up in the second group with Ibrahim Norrodin, team mate Helmi Azman and Spanish rider Javier Orellana.

Helmi crashed out of the battle for P2 on Lap 6 but managed to nurse his bike back to the pits. Azroy waited for the final two laps before making a bid for the podium.

The Musashi Boon Siew Honda Racing Team rider was able to sideline Ibrahim Norrodin, but was unable to prevent Javier Orellana from making it to second place.

Peerapong won a lights-to-flag race with a time of 19’39.440s, 3.913s ahead of the second group. Javier’s second place was clocked at 19’43.353s and Azroy, 19’43.926s.

In the premiere ASB1000 class, Malaysian duo Zaqhwan Zaidi and Azlan Shah missed out of the podium when they finished fourth and fifth in Race 1 behind race winner Bryan Staring, Broc Parkes and Yuki Ito.

The Asia Production 250cc Race 1 was taken by Kawasaki team mates Andy Muhammad Fadly and Aiki Iyoshi. Muklada Sarapuech finished third. Malaysia’s Muzakkir Mohamed was eighth in the 9-lap race.
