Former NBA Player Bostjan Nachbar to Coach Youth at Jr. NBA Malaysia Camp on April 20

The National Basketball Association today announced the Jr. NBA, the league’s global youth development program promoting healthy and active lifestyles, is returning to Malaysia return for the sixth consecutive year.  Since its launch in 2014, the Jr. NBA Malaysia program has reached more than 770,000 players and coaches across the country.

The program will tip off with the Jr. NBA Malaysia Camp on April 20 at the MABA Stadium with boys and girls participants from across the country. Former NBA player Bostjan Nachbar will attend the camp to assist with on-court instruction and help identify the 2019 Jr. NBA Malaysia All-Stars comprised of five boys and five girls.

Participants will experience world class basketball instruction and learn the program’s core values of sportsmanship, teamwork, a positive attitude, and respect (S.T.A.R.). Online registration for the Jr. NBA Malaysia Camp is open at www.jrnba.asia/malaysia.

The Jr. NBA Malaysia program continues to be a vital platform to inspire an active lifestyle and teach life lessons through sport as we address the health and wellness issues faced by the youth today,” said Jim Wong, NBA Asia Associate Vice President of Global Partnerships.  “We are committed to providing Malaysian players with more opportunities to learn the game through various basketball development initiatives in the country.”

“I’m grateful to be part of the Jr. NBA Malaysia program and eager to experience the passion for the game shared by youth from throughout Malaysia,” said Nachbar.  “This is a great opportunity to help teach kids fundamental skills and values that can positively impact their development as athletes and future leaders.”

Jr. NBA Coaches Academy, the train-the-trainers initiative establishing the foundation of basketball education, will return to Malaysia later this year to further support the local basketball development in the country.  Since 2017, the program has equipped more than 2,000 teachers from over 1,600 schools in 14 cities across Malaysia, including Johor, Kedah, Kuala Lumpur, Melaka, Penang and Selangor.

The Jr. NBA teaches the fundamental skills as well as the core values of the game at the grassroots level in an effort to help grow and improve the youth basketball experience for players, coaches and parents.  During the 2018-19 season, the NBA and its teams plan to reach more than 51 million youth in 75 countries through league play, in-school programming, clinics, skills challenges, and other outreach events.

The event is supported by the Ministry of Education Malaysia and official partner Gatorade, with Astro as the official broadcast partner of the Jr. NBA in Malaysia.
