Mixed doubles player Goh Soon Huat has been appointed the team captain in Malaysia’s campaign in this year’s Sudirman Cup to be held in Nanjing, China from May 19-26. He will be assisted by women’s doubles player Chow Mei Kuan.

The team left for Nanjing this morning – ready to do battle in the world mixed team championships but face an uphill task in a tough Group 1D after being drawn with 10-time champions China and India.

“I am surprised with the appointment as the team captain. I have accepted the challenge and responsibilities and will do whatever my best. My past experience of playing in team events under Lee Chong Wei gives me confidence,” said Soon Huat before leaving with the team.

Malaysia’s best outing in the Sudirman was reaching the semi-finals in 2009 and the quarter-finals in 2015.

The Malaysians open their campaign against China on Sunday and will face India two days later. The top two teams in the group will advance to the quarter-finals.  RIZAL ABDULLAH
