Malaysia’s world-class divers Pandelela Rinong-Leong Mun Yee have earned a place in next year’s Tokyo Olympics by clinching the silver medal at the World Championships in Gwanju, South Korea on Sunday (July 14).
 
The Malaysian pair totaled 312.72 points for the silver medal effort at the Nambu University Municipal Aquatics Centre.
 
As expected China secured the gold medal through Lu Wei-Zhang Jiaqi with 345.24 points while Samantha Bromberg-Katrina Young of the United States settled for the bronze medal with 304.86 points in the 10m synchronized platform.
 
All three pairs qualified for the Tokyo Olympics.
 
For the Malaysians, it was their best ever effort in the world meet. Pandelela-Mun Yee their previous best was winning the bronze medal in Rome in 2009 and in Barcelona in 2013.
 
Their performance in Gwangju put to rest some negatives comments in recent times following a change in the coaching lineup. – BY RIZAL ABDULLAH
