British Superbike Championship: BMW racers enjoy success at Thruxton

Peter Hickman (GBR) claimed the first podium for the new BMW S 1000 RR in the British Superbike Championship (BSB SBK) superbike class. The BMW rider from the Smiths Racing Team finished third in the second of the two races at Thruxton (GBR), where the racers contested round seven of the season.

Hickman was in contention at the front of the field for much of a fiercely-competitive opening race, and actually led for a period. In the end, he came home fifth, just one second behind the winner. Race two was reduced to eight laps following a number of red flags. After several thrilling battles, Hickman ended the exciting sprint in third place to claim a spot on the podium. “We were fast all weekend, right from the first practice session. It is nice to end the weekend with a podium, as we have all earned it,” said Hickman.

Tyco BMW Motorrad team’s Christian Iddon (GBR) was also among the front-runners in the opening race, but dropped back to 17th in the closing stages. Iddon bounced back to finish sixth in race two. His new team-mate at Tyco BMW until the end of the season is Glenn Irwin (GBR), who made his debut on the RR at Thruxton. He came home eleventh in race one and failed to finish race two.

In the Superstock race (BSB STK), BMW rider Taylor Mackenzie (GBR / Bathams Racing) claimed his fourth win of the season. Alex Olsen (GBR / Team IMR) finished fifth while Andrew Reid (GBR / Tyco BMW) was eighth.
