Mixed doubles pair Tan Kian Meng-Lai Pei Jing staved off a strong challenge from England’s Ben Lane-Jessica Pugh to stay alive in the mixed doubles in the World Championships in Basel, Switzerland on Wednesday.

The 14th seeded Malaysian’s thus join compatriots Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying in the third round. The 5th ranked Peng Soon-Liu Ying made the third after knocking out Joshua Hurlburt Yu-Josephine Wu of Canada.

In the third round, Kian Meng-Pei Jing pair face a hurdle as they are up against Thailand’s fourth seeds Dechapol Puavaranukroh-Sapsiree Taerattanachai who crushed Russians Rodion Alimov-Alina Davletova 21-12, 21-9.

There was also joy in the women’s doubles when 13th seeds Chow Mei Kuan-Lee Meng Yean made the third round. However, the pair had to go the full distance before prevailing 21-15, 13-21, 21-11 against Hsu Ya Ching-Hu Ling Fang of Chinese Taipei.

Malaysia’s campaign in the women’s singles came to an abrupt end when Soniia Cheah gave two sides of her game against Canada’s 11th seed Michelle Li. After putting up a tough fight in the first game which she lost 19-21, Soniia crumbled 4-21 in the second to crash out in 43 minutes.

It was also disappointment for Malaysia in the men’s doubles when All-England runners-up surrendered a one-game advantage against Japan’s Takuto Inoue-Yuki Kaneko in their 21-14, 17-21, 18-21 defeat in 58 minutes. The Malaysians had a first-round bye. RIZAL ABDULLAH
