The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) will embark on a new Project 2024 to target the gold medal at the 2024 Olympics in Paris and also a place in the Thomas Cup Final.

Newly-appointed BAM secretary-general Datuk Kenny Goh revealed this at a press conference at the Malaysia Badminton Academy in Bukit Kiara on Wednesday. The Project 2024, however, will need to get the approval of the BAM Council first.

Kenny, who is back with the national badminton body from Sept 1, after leaving Badminton Asia, where he was the Chief Executive Officer.

In announcing the new Project 2024, Kenny, however, made it clear that it does not mean the BAM will ignore the 2020 Tokyo Olympics or abandon its on-going plans and preparations to strike gold in Tokyo.

At the same press conference, Kenny also announced that Datuk Misbun will handle the men’s players (both singles and doubles) coaching team while Datuk Tey Seu Bok will be in charge of the women’s team and Chin Ee Hui will take charge of the mixed doubles.

BAM’s coaching director Wong Choong Hann will supervise overall.

Kenny, who is also the chairman of the coaching and training committee, drove home a strong message that the BAM was also prepared to release players, including seniors if they fail to achieve the KPI.

The first review is on Dec 31. Those who fail will be released and those who survive will be reviewed and evaluated again on April 30, 2020.

“There will be pitstops to achieve milestones,” said Kenny. RIZAL ABDULLAH
