Professionals Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong kept Malaysia’s flag flying when the duo marched into the men’s doubles final in the USD300,000 Yonex Chinese Taipei Open in Taipei on Saturday.

The Rio Olympics silver medallists seeded fourth in Taipei,  staged a remarkable recovery to blow away Denmark’s Mathias Boe-Mads Conrad Petersen 18-21, 21-11, 21-12 in 56 minutes and take their head to head tally to 2-0.

V Shem-Wee Kiong will meet Korea’s Choi Solgyu-Seo Seung Jae in Sunday’s final. The unseeded Koreans upstaged home favorites and No 2 seeds Lee Yang-Wang Chi Lin in another three-game thriller, winning 19-21, 25-23, 23-21 in an absorbing 77 minutes.

For V Shem-Wee Kiong it has been a tough journey with all their matches going into three games that went beyond 50 minutes. Their march into the final means the former World No 1 have the chance to win their second world tour title after winning the Thailand Masters at the start of the year.

However, it was a disappointment for another Malaysian professional pair Chang Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying who were the top seeds in the mixed doubles.

Their run came to an end when they fell to fourth seeds Tang Chun Man-Tse Ying Suet of Hong Kong China in straight games 10-21, 17-21 in 35 minutes.

This is the third defeat for the Malaysians in their four meetings thus far against Chun Man-Ying Suet.

The men’s singles top seed and home favorite Chou Tien Chen who survived with a 23-25, 21-10, 21-13 against Indonesia’s rising star, unseeded Shesar Hiren Rhustavito in 64 minutes.

Tien Chen will meet Korea’s Heo Kwang Hee who overcame Japan’s Koki Watanabe 16-21, 21-15, 21-12.

Korea’s top woman shuttler Sung Ji-Hyun will be up against Canada’s Michelle Li for the women’s singles crown. Ji-hyun beat compatriot An Se-young 21-19, 21-15 while Michelle prevailed 21-9, 15-21, 21-10 against Thai qualifier Supanida Katethong. – BY RIZAL ABDULLAH
