The Johor State Government presented Johor Darul Takzim RM500,000 incentive for winning this year’s Malaysia Cup but club owner HRH Tunku Ismail Ibni Sultan Ibrahim has returned the amount.
HRH Tunku Ismail, who is also the Regent of Johor, in returning the whopping amount, wants the State Government to use the money to cover the cost of buying river cleaning boats to clean rivers in the state.
The Johor Government had allocated RM500,000 in incentives to Johor Darul Takzim for winning the prestigious much sought after silverware in Malaysian football. The incentive was announced by Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Dr Sahruddin Jamal.
In the final played at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil on Nov 2 the Southern Tigers beat Kedah 3-0. This is JDT’s second Malaysia Cup title after winning the first in 2017 which was also against Kedah. JDT won 2-0.
A statement posted on the Southern Tigers Facebook stated “this is HRH Tunku Ismail and Johor Darul Takzim’s contribution” to efforts to improve pollution problems in Johor.
Earlier this year Johor hogged the limelight when hundreds of schoolchildren in Pasir Gudang fell ill due to pollution that led to many schools being closed. Three months later the same happened again when toxic fumes affected schoolchildren in the same area due to river pollution.
For the record JDT clinched the Malaysian Super League title for a record sixth consecutive year this season. Apart from winning the Malaysia Cup the Southern Tigers also won the Charity Shield.
