Shanghai will host Formula E for the first time in May 2024, ten years after the first-ever Formula E race was held in Beijing
Both China and Formula E are world leaders in EV mobility and driving technological progress, making Shanghai a strongly symbolic destination for Formula E in its tenth anniversary season
Fans at the double-header of races will experience the world’s most competitive motorsport featuring the most advanced electric race car ever built
Chinese racing team ERT Formula E Team has competed in the championship since the beginning and is committed to a strong performance in front of home fans
The CEO of Formula E and the Team Principal of ERT Formula E Team visited Shanghai today ahead of the Formula E races in May 2024 to declare it was a “special honour” for the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship to race in the city for the first time.
Formula E will race at the Shanghai International Circuit with a double-header taking place on Saturday, 25 May and Sunday, 26 May 2024.
The first-ever race in Formula E history was held on the streets of Beijing in September 2014. Since then, China has hosted seven races including in Sanya and Hong Kong, with the most recent in March 2019.
As the first all-electric world championship prepares to celebrate its tenth season, the leader of Formula E, CEO Jeff Dodds, and Alex Hui, Team Principal of Chinese-owned outfit ERT Formula E Team, visited Shanghai to officially begin the countdown to the races and to acknowledge the significance of Shanghai’s place in the Formula E calendar.
Jeff Dodds, CEO, Formula E, said:
“It is a special honour for Formula E to race in Shanghai for the first time next May. We will be marking ten years as the first all-electric motorsport by continuing to push boundaries and race in Shanghai, a new venue for us in China, which is the global leader in the development and adoption of electric vehicles.
“While racing in Shanghai is highly symbolic for Formula E, it will also be an incredible race weekend for fans. There is a passionate sporting fanbase in the city, and we cannot wait for them to experience a completely new style of motor racing at up to 200mph and more than 100 overtakes in most races.”
Alex Hui, Team Principal, ERT Formula E Team, said:
“As a Chinese team that has been part of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship since the very beginning, we are excited to be competing in what will be our homecoming races. Everyone in the team is already working hard for the new season and I know our drivers Dan Ticktum and Sérgio Sette Câmara are committed to doing their very best for local fans. They are already in the simulators practicing the challenging Shanghai circuit.”
Formula E is recognised as officially the most sustainable sport in the world, showcasing how high-performance sport and sustainability can co-exist.
Formula E was conceived in 2011 by businessman Alejandro Agag (now Formula E Co-Founder & Chairman) and the FIA as the first all-electric single-seater motor racing championship, with the explicit mission of showcasing sustainable mobility in the heart of iconic world cities.
The first race was held on the streets of Beijing in September 2014. Today, nine seasons and 116 races later, Formula E is the first FIA-sanctioned electric world championship and established as the world’s most sustainable sport.
Last season, Formula E and the FIA developed and introduced the GEN3 race car – the fastest, lightest, most powerful, efficient and sustainable electric race car ever built – capable of 200mph / 322km/h and regenerating 600KWh of energy.
When the GEN3 races in Shanghai, it will be 75 per cent more powerful and 95 km/h faster than the first-generation car that took to the streets of Beijing.
Demonstrating that integrating sustainability into sport does not mean a compromise on quality of action, Formula E’s drivers pushed the GEN3 to the limit last season, breaking every on-track speed and sporting record with triple-digit overtakes in the majority of races.
Season 10 of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship begins in Mexico City on Saturday, 13 January 2024.
