# Iskandar beats Daren Liew for a place in the quarter-finals
# Ho Yen Mei also in quarter-finals in women’s singles
# Malaysia have two pairs in mixed doubles quarter-finals
# But double blow for Malaysian pairs in women’s doubles
Malaysia will have two pairs in the mixed doubles fighting for a place in the semi-finals in the USD200,000 Yonex Taiwan Open Grand Prix Gold in Taipeh but it was the end of Malaysia’s campaign in the women’s doubles.
Top seeds in the mixed doubles Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying moved into the quarter-finals with a 21-15, 21-17 win over Indonesia’s Alfian Eko Prasetya-Annisa Saufika in 33 minutes in a second round match.
The world No 11 who will carry Malaysia’s challenge in the mixed doubles in the Rio Olympics in August will face China’s fifth seeds Zheng Siwei-Cheng Qingchen in the quarter-finals.
Equally impressive were Tan Kian Meng-Lai Pei Jing who have shown some impressive results since coming back together recently. The Malaysians ranked No 44 in the world battled for 52 minutes in their 21-18, 14-21, 21-15 win over Taiwan’s Wang Chi Lin-Cheng Chi Ya.
The unseeded Malaysians, however, face a tough quarter-final match against Hong Kong’s second seeds Reginald Lee Chun Hei-Chau Hoi Wah of Hong Kong – 21-12, 21-9 winners over China’s Li Junhui- Zhong Qianxin.
National champion and 13th seed Iskandar Zulkarnain Zainuddin is also through to the quarter-finals when he defeated his former national teammate Daren Liew 23-21, 19-21, 23-21 in a tightly fought third round match which lasted a 73 minutes.
It was Iskandar’s first win over Daren. He will now meet Thai challenger Khosit Phetpradap for a place in the last four – something which is within his reach against the the World No 87.
In the men’s doubles national number one Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong, seeded No 2 in Taipeh, overcame compatriots Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi 21-19, 21-18 to reach the quarter-finals. Their next opponents are China’s fifth seeds Huang Kaixiang-Zheng Siwei. The Chinese beat Taiwan’s Su Cheng Heng-Yang Po Hsuan 22-20, 21-17.
Both the Malaysian pairs in the women failed to make the quarter-finals. Fourth seeds Vivian Hoo-Woon Khe Wei, once again showed their inconsistency when they fell to a 21-17, 14-21, 14-21 defeat to Thailand’s Chaladcham Chayanit-Phataimas Muenwong in 58 minutes.
Chow Mei Kuan-Lee Meng Yean were also shown the exit after going down 10-21, 11-21 to in 34 minutes to Korea’s Go Ah-ra-Kong Hee-yong.
But Ho Yen Mei kept her challenge alive in the women’s singles after a three-set battle against Korea’s Lee Jang-mi before prevailing 21-18, 8-21, 21-18 in 57 minutes.
Her reward is a quarter-final clash against home favourite and second seed Tai Tzu Ying who stopped China’s Gao Fangjie 21-15, 21-11.
