Former champions Johor Darul Takzim (JDT) gave a dominant performance for a convincing 4-0 win over Global FC of the Philippines to go to the top in a Group F AFC Cup match at the Larkin Stadium in Johor Bahru on Tuesday.
With the whitewash the Southern Tigers have seven points from three matches as Global FC slipped into second place with six points. AFC Cup debutants Cambodia’s Beoungket Angkor snatched a 1-0 win over Myanmar’s Magwe and are third with three points while the Myanmar club are at the bottom with only one point to show.
The homesters opened the floodgates in the 30th minute when Mahali Jasuli put the finishing touches from a Safiq Rahim pass much to the delight of the 11,000 home fans, including club owner Brig Gen Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim the Crown Prince of Johor.
JDT were 2-0 up after 34 minutes. The second goal came via a penalty which Safiq converted after Hazwan Bakri was felled inside the box by Global defender Amani Aquinaldo.
JDT, who drew 1-1 against Magwe in Yangon in their last match in the group, took time to get into the scoring act in the second half and had to wait till the 87th minute for the third goal.
Substitute Brian Ferreira, who replaced Mahali in the 60th minute, was set up by Gabriel Guerra and he made no mistake with a right footed stiff grounder that beat Global goalkeeper Patrick Deyto all the way.
Deyto was beaten again in added time and this time he had to pick the ball from inside his net after defender Marco Antonio planted a glancing header past him from a freekick by Guerra.
For the record JDT won the AFC Cup in 2015 to create history as the first team from Malaysia to win the title – with a 1-0 win over FC Istiklol in the final.
Meanwhile at the National Olympic Stadium in Phnom Penh an own goal by Magwe defender Jean Oulai gave the homesters a 1-0 win which gave them third spot in the group. Oulai diverted the ball into his own net following a Tomoki Muratmatsu corner.
Magwe also hadsubstitute Wai Set Phyo sent off for a second yellow card in the dying minutes of the match.
