National No 1 pair Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong were the only ones to bring some cheer in the USD120,000 Yonex German Open in Mulheim on the first day of the championships on Wednesday.

The Malaysians cleared the first hurdle with a 21-17, 21-16 win over homesters Raphael Back-Peter Kaesbauer 21-17, 21-16 in only 30 minutes.

However, the battle starts in the second round on Thursday when V Shem-Wee Kiong face second seeds and world No 5 pair Chai Biao-Hong Wei who downed the Croatian pair of Zvonimir Durkinjak-Zvonimir Hoelbling 21-13, 21-13.

Privateers Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong stumbled at the first hurdle when they failed to get past third seeds and world No 7 Hiroyuki Endo-Kenichi Hayakawa 21-18, 21-14 in 35 minutes.

It was also the end of the road for Malaysia’s top mixed doubles pair Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying who suffered a surprised first round exit. The Malaysians lost to unheralded Robert Mateusiak-Nadziezda Zieba of Poland who won 21-19, 21-14 in 37 minutes.

The Malaysian pair lost 21-17, 21-15 to Chian’s Zhang Siwei-Chen Qingchen in the final.
