World junior champion Goh Jin Wei continued her fine run the women’s singles to reach the semi-finals in the USD120,000 Yonex Sunrise Indonesia Masters Grand Prix Gold in Balikpapan, East Kalimantan on Friday.
In the quarter-finals the 16-year-old from Penang outplayed China’s Gao Fangjie 21-16, 21-18 in 39 minutes. The eighth seeded Malaysian will face second seed Nitchaon Jindapol of Thailand in the semi-finals. Nitchaon defeated Japan’s Ayumi Mine 21-11, 21-17 in the quarter-finals.
There was also good new for Malaysia in the mixed doubles when third seeds Tan Kian Meng-Lai Pei Jing gave another good performance in their 21-8, 21-14 win over Lukhi April Nugroho to advance to the last four.
The Malaysians will play Indonesia’s eighth seeds Edi Subaktiar-Richi Puspital Dili who stopped compatriots Irfan Fadhila-Weni Anggraini 18-21, 27-25, 21-6 in a 64 minute match.
Malaysia’s new combination Chooi Kah Ming-Low Juan Shen pulled off an upset in the men’s doubles to reach the semi-finals. Kah Ming-Juan Shen beat Indonesia’s fourth seeds Hardianto Hardianto-Kenas Adi Haryanto 15-21, 21-15, 21-18 in 64 minutes.
The Malaysians, who had to come through the qualifiers to make the main draw will play China’s Han Chengkai-Zhou Haodong for a place in the final. The Chinese upset compatriots and sixth seeds Huang Kaixiang-Wang Yilyu 19-21, 21-15, 21-13 in the quarter-finals.
