*Jothiswaran continues his giant killing feats in Alor Star
However, Penang, known as a badminton powerhouse, having produced many Malaysian greats, were equal to the task and walked away with seven titles while hosts Kedah settled for three.
Bhirentha, lived to her top billing with a 21-14, 21-8 win over compatriot Teoh Mei Xing (seeded 3/4) in 30 minutes but it was her young brother Jothiswaran, unseeded in Alor Star who stole the show by winning the Boys’ Under-16 title to continue his giant killing feats when he packed off top Ng Eng Cheong with a come-from behind 14-21, 21-8, 21-15 win.
In the semi-finals Jothiswaran had knocked out second seeded Lim Yik Fong of Selangor with a 21-18, 21-18 win. He rode on his win over Yik Fong to continue his winning ways in the annual 100PLUS Junior Circuit which has become the perfect launching pad for future badminton stars.
Not to be left out was younger sister Letshanaa. Although unseeded, Letshanaa stunned second seeded Chew Wern of Perak in straight sets – winning 21-13, 21-19 in 25 minutes.
In the Boys’ Under-18 singles final, top seed and hot favourite Muhammad Lukman Hakim slumped to a shock 18-21, 13-21 to his unseeded compatriot Muhammad Izzuddin Shamsul Muzli in only 30 miniutes.
Izzuddin’s hopes of a doubles disappeared when he and Muhammaded Syazmil Idham were beaten 16-21, 19-21 by Low Hang Yi-Woon Man Hung in the all-Selangor Boys’ Under-18 doubles final.
Selangor also walked away with the Girls’ Under-18 doubles title through Teoh Mei Xing-Yonna Lee Zhi Qing who came off with a 21-13, 15-21, 21-12 win on 40 minutes over Penang’s Kong Yi Jin-Lim Jee Lynn.
Selangor’s K. Saranya, the top seed in the Girls’ Under-16 singles was jolted by seconded Lee Shun Wei of Penang in the final. The Penang lass 21-15, 21-17 in 40 minutes.
It was an all-Selangor affair in the Girls’ Under-14 singles final with top seed Kasturi Radharkrishnan in command with an easy 21-16, 21-9 win over Dharshinie Vasigaran in 20 minutes.
